Yes total sticklers for security. I travel 2 or 3 times a week made me massage my back pack so it would fit in small carry on contraption. It fits under seats and is not too large but shape (roundish)
Just talked to a car rental service. He advised we rent in town rather than here because the taxes on the businesses are astronomical. We'll save like 11% by going in town to rent.

They routinely detain, harass, and completely search non Canadian passengers who arrive on international flights. I know because I was one of them. Avoid flying in here internationally.
This airport sucks major ass. If you get in on a connecting flight you have to go through security AGAIN. Make sure you don't have any liquids in your carry on.
dont use your phone as a boarding pass they get extremely confused and it takes six times as long to use it. if you have an alienware computer be prepare for many many many questions
If you have a Nexus Card, don't get too excited. Nexus security lane offers NO advantage at YQR. Lane is unstaffed, no unique security lane, no signage indicating Nexus passengers have priority. FAIL.
