We joke that Wooly's is our home away from home, but with so many great shows, we do spend some time here! Good sound, friendly staff, and huge beers ... they are $7, but you get your money's worth.
The best grocer in town. Employee owned and it shows; the service is outstanding and everyone takes pride in their work. My daughter has Celiac and is pleased with the gluten free options available.
The Des Moines roll is divine! The Hawaiian fried rice and Tom Yum soup are also favorites. Thanks to the great food and attentive service we have become regulars at this out-of-the-way spot.
I really love this theater for supporting smaller, indie movies and interesting events like showing old classics and lesser known documentaries. You can get a glass of wine or a beer, too.
The selection isn't up to par with the larger Hy-Vee stores liquor departments, but I am glad to have this little store nearby. Pretty decent selection and super friendly staff.

The sour cream raisin pie is fantastic especially if you want a cream pie that isn't too overly sweet. The manager told me they are made on site and it was really fresh.

Pork chop on a stick and the peppermint bar at Bauder's are my two very favorite Iowa State Fair treats. The extra extra large beer at the craft beer tent are really extra extra large.
One of my favorite Des Moines recreational places, Gray's Lake is wonderful for walks, bird watching, and boating. When my children were young, we spent a lot of time at the beach!
The best hot & sour soup I have ever eaten, brimming with fresh veggies and tofu. My favorite entree is the #26, Bun (vermicelli salad) topped with egg rolls and grilled shrimp and meat.
I had the Cuban sandwich, which was wonderful and grilled to crispy, toasty perfection. Both the hot and sweet, fruity sauces were delicious. A great place to get something different.
One of my favorite haunts off the trails leading from east Des Moines to Bondurant. Excellent service, strong mixed drinks, delicious food, and a great beer selection. Worth a stop.
Delicious crispy fried chicken and mashed potatoes smothered in a peppery gravy. Spring for a side of fried okra (the small is a generous portion), which reminds me of tender asparagus.
My favorite microbrewery, accessible from the Gray's Lake trail. My favorites are their flagship IPA, Des Moines IPA, East Side Attitude (lager), and the seasonal, Mayday Mayday. Ask for munchies.
Fun tour of a great brewery and good corporate citizen. The ticket line starts to form at about 9:45am on weekdays. Arrive early to secure a spot.
Fantastic venue, but the drinks are pricey. Buy a small bottle of water and refill it at the water fountain/bottle filling stations by the restrooms.
Try the Amish fried pie, which has a delicious crust and a sweet-tart filling. The Mega Rite is huge and tasty. In fact all of the portions are generous. You won't leave hungry.
