The house was built in 1858 by Joseph Mabry, Jr. The house served as headquaters for various generals from the noth and the south during the city's alternating occupations.

Most of the 1600 Confederates and 50-60 Union prisoners of war buried here were lost to disease. An impressive 48 foot tall monument of a Confederate soldier facing north is the centerpiece.
