Dr. B.B. Dougherty was president from Appalachian's founding as Watauga College in 1899 until 1955. With his brother, D.D. Dougherty, their goal was to educate teachers in Northwest North Carolina.
Located adjacent to the Appalachian State campus, the Boone Cemetery is the resting place for many who played a prominent role in the history of the town and university. It's a walk back through time.
