WWII history buffs will be enamored. But this is a world class museum that everyone should visit. There are exhibits on either side of the street that can occupy the better part of a day.
Excellent sandwiches & other food. If you go to the WWII Museum, this is a good place to break for a bite to eat. And if you have more exhibits to see, you can pop right back into the museum after.
Ride the St. Charles streetcar (a moving 'National Historic Landmark' alongside SF's cable cars) & take a self-guided walking tour of the incredible homes in this oak tree-lined neighborhood.
If you're visiting the Garden District or just in the area, this is a nice place to find some locally-made art, handicrafts and other goods. Check out artist Cary Chun Lee's super fun cat paintings.
Ask for a "Garden Room" table when making your reservation. At lunch, enjoy a more relaxed dress code, 25¢ martinis, & the classic 3-course menu: turtle soup, quail, & bread pudding soufflé. Amazing!
If riding the St. Charles streetcar suits you, ride it to the end of the line and enjoy a walk around the park (or Tulane Univ. across the street), do some bird-watching, or visit the Audubon Zoo.
"Louisiana cuisine with a French accent." This was one of our best meals in New Orleans—and we happened upon it by chance. If you're in the Audubon area, it's definitely worth a visit.

Amazing jazz. Showtimes @ 5, 6, 8, 9 & 10pm nightly. Buy tickets at the door. TINY venue w/limited seating, so be sure to line up at least 30 minutes before showtime. Bring drinks (none sold inside).
A can't-miss institution. The most brilliant part is you can get your beignet & café au lait fix 24-hours a day. Seat yourself at any open table and pay the server as they bring your order. Cash only.
Created by Central Grocery in 1906, the muffuletta is New Orleans’ signature sandwich. If this sounds like your average Italian hero, then the delicious marinated olive salad will change your mind. Leia mais.

Worth checking out for the history; it's the oldest operating public market in the US. A lot of kitschy trinkets, but no doubt a good place to find some interesting souvenirs and art, too.
Nice food & service in elegant dining rooms, with a wraparound balcony overlooking picturesque Jackson Square. But don't miss the "Seance Room" upstairs, worth a visit in itself. (Note: It's haunted.)
Wonderful, highly detailed museum on European settlement of Louisiana, that doesn't ignore indigenous and slave history. Free to enter!
One of the highlights of our trip. The $5 "tour" (1pm on weekdays) is actually the most engaging and fun one hour history lesson you've ever seen, with props that are actual artifacts. Way worth it.
It's an active workshop, with artisans crafting gas lamps still used across NOLA. There's a nice courtyard, and a small exhibit about the history of gas lighting. Worth stopping in for a few minutes.
Though not always a bar, this building is "reputed to be the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States," having been built in the 1700s. Enjoy a drink and some piano tunes by candlelight.
A local institution, this shabbily elegant restaurant and bar with a Spanish-style courtyard is known for its Pimm's Cups and muffuletta sandwiches.
Check the calendar for special events on Friday evenings, and don't miss the adjacent sculpture garden.
Competition for a seat at the carousel can be fierce, but it's worth it for the novelty. The drinks are great, and the Vieux Carré (invented here) and Sazerac (a NOLA classic) are popular choices.
Evidently they have a reputation for somewhat surly service, but that wasn't our experience. Known for their poboys—yum! Order at the counter & know what you want before you reach the register.
